499 Haight Street, Once a Liquor Store, Now a CVS

On September 27, 2011 a four alarm fire burned down the Walgreen’s store located at Haight and Fillmore in the Lower Haight. The Walgreen’s store was at that location since 1984. It was eventually replaced by a CVS which opened in 2014.

Going back to the early 1950s, the 499 location operated as the Haight-Fillmore Liquor Store. Using the Polk Street Directory as reference, the Haight-Fillmore location operated here until 1972. After that it was known as Jerry’s Liquorsuntil approximately 1983.

This corner spot transitioned from a liquor corner store to a Walgreen’s pharmacy. The four alarm fire destroyed this building and the residential units above it. Residents waited for more than two years to regain entrance to their apartments.

Do you have memories of the 500 location before it became a Walgreen’s? Let us know, we’ll update this post with more information as we keep researching this location.
